Cllr Colin Slade has welcomed Devon County Council’s decision to remove Canal House, known locally as The Moorings, from its list of surplus properties. The building, a vital hub for the Grand Western Canal ranger services, will remain under council stewardship following strong local opposition and with the support of Cllr Slade.
“This is a victory for common sense and for Tiverton,” said Cllr Slade. “Canal House is not just a building, it’s an nerve centre for the rangers who maintain the canal, respond to emergencies, and provide invaluable educational services.”
Devon County Council had proposed selling the early 19th-century building, citing maintenance costs and suggesting that alternative accommodations could suffice. However, Cllr Slade argued that relocating the ranger service would undermine their ability to respond quickly to incidents and jeopardise educational activities linked to the site.
“I’ve been in close contact with residents and canal management. Their message was clear, the building is fit for purpose, with most required work being cosmetic. More importantly, moving the rangers away from immediate access to their vehicles and tools would be a logistical mistake, costing more than it saved.” Slade added.
Cllr Slade also highlighted that funding from Mid Devon District Council for the canal’s upkeep is partially contingent on Canal House’s continued use for educational purposes, a condition that could have been compromised by its sale.
Following a robust discussion at the council’s land and property committee, members agreed to remove Canal House from the surplus list.
“This decision ensures the rangers can continue their critical work without disruption, preserving both the efficiency of their operations and the educational value of the site,” concluded Cllr Slade.
