Mid-Devon Council has been accused of imposing ‘shambolic’ changes in its refuse and recycling collections on local families.
MP Ian Liddell-Grainger says he is regularly receiving complaints about the new regime which appears to have been imposed without any consultation or forethought.
The MP, who represents Bridgwater and West Somerset and will contest the new Tiverton and Minehead seat for the Conservatives, told the Commons the new three-weekly refuse collection scheme had been ‘taken over by a draconian group of councillors who are determined to make the lives of the people of Tiverton and Mid-Devon impossible”.
Today he said the council had adopted a ruthless approach to the operation of the scheme.
“People are having notices posted on their bins if they use the wrong recycling container and in general there seems to have been a total lack of consultation or explanation about the workings of the new system,” he said.
“The new recycling regime operating in Somerset took many long months to bed down and Mid-Devon should be adopting a far more lenient approach to those who may not yet fully understand what they need to do.
“Sadly this is another shambolic, ill thought-out operation cobbled up by an authority which is rapidly chiselling out a new and lower benchmark for incompetence.”
