Bus operator First Group has been accused of going back on its word to introduce improvements on its 28 route between Minehead and Taunton.
MP Ian Liddell-Grainger says despite assurances he was given three months ago passengers’ complaints are still arriving in his mailbox.
Now he asked the company when he can expect to see action rather than just words.
Mr Liddell-Grainger, MP for Bridgwater and West Somerset, met First officials in February after a crescendo of complaints about the service.
Travellers claimed buses frequently broke down, were late, or never appeared at all. While on Mondays and Fridays they were frequently filled with visitors travelling to and from Butlins, leaving no room for local people.
The service was under threat of being withdrawn because of Somerset Council’s cash crisis, though was saved, albeit with a reduced frequency.
But, said Mr Liddell-Grainger, things had appeared to improve little.
“There are now some express services to cater for people travelling to and from Butlins,” he said.
“But I am still hearing the same old complaints about overcrowding - on one recent journey every seat was taken and there were 16 people standing, which cannot be safe when one considers the nature and length of the road between Taunton and Minehead.
“And people are telling me the buses are still running late, or sometimes not at all.
“First told me these problems were going to be sorted and we were to expect a fleet of new electric vehicles to start running soon. There are probably statistically fewer problems than there used to be but that is only down to the fact that with a less frequent service there are commensurately fewer occasions when buses fail to arrive or break down.
“Either way, bus users in West Somerset are still fed up with being treated like this - and are as anxious as I am to learn when First is going to sort out the problems rather than just talking about doing so.”
