In the past few years the Government has invested in equipping the National Health Service with the facilities it needs to cope with the growing demands of an ageing population.
But buildings alone aren’t enough: they have to be staffed - and staff shortages are putting enormous pressure on those already working in the service.
More money must be invested in recruiting, training - and properly rewarding - doctors, nurses and health care assistants.
We must also ensure that the NHS remains accessible to all and free at the point of delivery. And where possible more specialist services should be provided locally to reduce the need for journeys to district hospitals.
